Bangladesh Election Commission Announces Preliminary Voter List
Dhaka – The Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) announced the preliminary voter list on Tuesday, revealing a total of 119,689,289 eligible voters for the upcoming parliamentary elections, anticipated to be held in late December or early January. This figure represents a slight increase from the voter count in the 2018 elections. The EC stated the list includes 59,845,922 male voters, 59,843,367 female voters, and 733 third-gender voters.
The announcement marks a key step in the electoral process, allowing citizens to verify their registration details and submit claims for inclusion or corrections. The EC has established designated centers across the country where voters can inspect the list, which is also available online and at local election offices. A period of 21 days has been allocated for claims and objections, after which a final voter list will be published.
Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal addressed a press conference detailing the verification process and encouraged citizens to actively participate in ensuring the accuracy of the voter list. He emphasized the Commission’s commitment to holding free, fair, and credible elections, stating that all necessary measures are being taken to maintain the integrity of the electoral process. Awal also highlighted the use of technology, including biometric identification, to prevent voter fraud and ensure one person, one vote.
However, the announcement has been met with cautious optimism from various political parties. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the main opposition, has expressed concerns regarding the potential for manipulation and irregularities. Party leaders have called for greater transparency and independent monitoring of the voter list verification process. They have also raised questions about the accuracy of the voter database and the inclusion of ineligible voters. The BNP has announced plans to deploy its own teams to cross-reference the EC’s list with their own records and identify discrepancies.
The ruling Awami League (AL) has welcomed the announcement, expressing confidence in the EC’s ability to conduct a fair election. AL leaders have urged all political parties to cooperate with the Commission and refrain from making unsubstantiated allegations. They maintain that the AL is prepared to face the elections and is confident of securing a victory based on its track record of development and good governance.
International observers are closely monitoring the electoral preparations in Bangladesh. Several organizations, including the European Union and the Commonwealth, have indicated their intention to deploy election monitoring missions to assess the fairness and transparency of the elections. The presence of international observers is seen as crucial for bolstering public confidence in the electoral process and ensuring a peaceful and credible outcome.
The EC is also working on finalizing the delimitation of constituencies, a process that involves redrawing electoral boundaries based on population changes. This process is expected to be completed before the announcement of the election schedule. The Commission is also reviewing security arrangements and coordinating with law enforcement agencies to ensure a peaceful election environment. The scale of the election – involving over 300 parliamentary seats – presents a significant logistical challenge, requiring extensive planning and coordination.
