Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni emphasized that the platform will provide free access to educational content aligned with the national curriculum for students from primary to higher secondary levels. 'This initiative will help bridge the educational divide between urban and rural areas, ensuring that no child is left behind in our digital age,' she stated during the launch ceremony.
The platform features interactive video lessons, e-books, and practice exercises in both Bangla and English. It has been designed to function effectively even with low internet bandwidth, making it accessible to students in areas with limited connectivity. The government has partnered with local telecom operators to provide free data access to the platform for all users.
Local educators have welcomed the initiative, noting that it comes at a crucial time when the country is still recovering from the educational disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. 'Many students in remote areas struggled during school closures, and this platform could help address learning losses while making education more inclusive,' said Professor Ayesha Rahman, an education expert at Dhaka University.
The project's first phase will cover core subjects including mathematics, science, and language arts, with plans to expand to vocational training modules in the coming months. The government has allocated approximately 500 crore taka (about $46 million) for the initiative's implementation over the next three years.
In related developments, the Ministry of Education announced it would provide digital devices to 500,000 underprivileged students nationwide to ensure equitable access to the new platform. This move is part of the government's broader 'Digital Bangladesh' vision, which aims to transform the country into a technology-driven society by 2041.
International organizations have praised Bangladesh's commitment to digital education. A spokesperson for UNESCO's Dhaka office noted that such initiatives position Bangladesh as a regional leader in educational technology innovation. The platform is expected to benefit approximately 20 million students across the country once fully operational.
While the initiative has been widely applauded, some education advocates have called for additional support systems, including teacher training programs and offline alternatives for areas with no internet connectivity. The government has acknowledged these concerns and stated that complementary programs are being developed to address these challenges.
The launch of Digital Shikkha represents a significant milestone in Bangladesh's journey toward inclusive digital education and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, which focuses on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
