Bangladesh's government has taken a significant step towards launching commercial 5G services by approving the allocation of spectrum bands for auction. The decision, announced by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), marks a key milestone in the country's broader Digital Bangladesh initiative to modernize telecommunications infrastructure.
The BTRC has finalized the spectrum bands, including 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz frequencies, which telecom operators will bid for in an upcoming auction. This move follows successful trials conducted earlier this year, with operators like Grameenphone, Robi, and Banglalink participating in testing phases. The government aims to have 5G services operational by 2025, though industry experts caution that infrastructure upgrades and investment costs may pose challenges.
Minister Syed Abul Hossain emphasized the strategic importance of the project. "5G is not just about faster internet; it's a catalyst for innovation across sectors like healthcare, education, and agriculture," he said. "This initiative aligns with our vision to build a digitally empowered society."
The project is part of a larger National Digital Infrastructure Project, which includes expanding fiber-optic networks and establishing national data centers. These facilities are intended to support e-governance, cloud services, and data storage needs, particularly in rural areas where connectivity remains limited.
Despite the progress, challenges persist. Rural regions face infrastructure gaps, and the high cost of deploying 5G equipment could slow adoption. The BTRC has stated that the auction process will prioritize transparency and fair competition to ensure equitable access across operators.
Industry analysts note that Bangladesh's IT sector, which contributed over $1.2 billion in exports last year, is poised for growth as 5G enables new technologies such as IoT and smart farming. However, they stress the need for complementary policies to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural populations.
The government has allocated significant funding for the initiative, with support from international financial institutions. While exact figures are still being finalized, officials have confirmed that the project is a priority for the current fiscal year.
As Bangladesh advances its digital transformation, stakeholders remain cautiously optimistic. Success will depend on effective implementation, sustained investment, and collaboration between public and private sectors to ensure the benefits reach all segments of society.
