The Chattogram Port Authority has unveiled a comprehensive modernization plan aimed at significantly increasing the container handling capacity of Bangladesh's premier seaport. The initiative comes in response to a steady rise in import-export volumes and the strategic goal of positioning Chattogram as a key logistics hub in South Asia. Officials believe the expansion is critical for sustaining the country's economic growth and meeting the demands of the regional market.
At the heart of the project is the installation of new gantry cranes and the dredging of the port channel to allow for the berthing of larger mother vessels. Currently, many large ships destined for Bangladesh must offload cargo at transshipment ports in Singapore or Sri Lanka, adding time and cost to the supply chain. By deepening the channel and upgrading equipment, the port authority aims to accommodate vessels with a draft of up to 12 meters directly at the jetties.
Rear Admiral M Shahjahan, Chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority, emphasized the importance of these upgrades during a press briefing at the port headquarters. He stated that the efficiency of the port is directly linked to the competitiveness of Bangladeshi products in the international market. The new equipment is expected to reduce vessel turnaround time by at least 24 hours, allowing for faster clearance of goods and alleviating the chronic congestion often seen at the outer anchorage.
Beyond physical infrastructure, the modernization plan includes a digital overhaul. The authority is implementing a new integrated management system that will streamline customs procedures and documentation. Business leaders in Chattogram have long advocated for a reduction in red tape, noting that digitalization is essential for transparency and speed. The new system promises to integrate banking, customs, and shipping lines into a single platform, minimizing the need for physical paperwork and manual intervention.
The expansion has also sparked discussions regarding the development of the Bay Terminal, a mega-project intended to supplement the existing New Mooring Container Terminal. Once completed, the Bay Terminal will provide additional berths and yard space, further boosting the port's annual handling capacity. While funding and land acquisition for the project have faced delays in the past, recent government assurances suggest that momentum is building to expedite the construction process.
Local stakeholders, including the Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry, have welcomed the news. They argue that while the capital Dhaka remains the commercial center, Chattogram is the engine of trade. Improvements in port infrastructure are expected to have a ripple effect on the local economy, potentially spurring growth in related sectors such as logistics, warehousing, and manufacturing. Furthermore, a more efficient port could attract foreign direct investment, as investors look for reliable supply chain routes in the region.
However, challenges remain. Environmental groups have raised concerns about the impact of extensive dredging on marine biodiversity and the livelihoods of local fishing communities. The port authority has responded by committing to an environmental impact assessment and promising mitigation measures to protect the surrounding ecosystem. Balancing industrial growth with environmental sustainability will be a key test for the project's long-term success.
As Bangladesh eyes graduation from Least Developed Country status, the role of Chattogram Port becomes ever more pivotal. The current expansion efforts are viewed not just as infrastructure upgrades, but as a necessary evolution to integrate more deeply into the global economy. With the right combination of physical infrastructure, digital efficiency, and environmental stewardship, Chattogram is poised to reinforce its status as the gateway to Bangladesh.
