Chattogram, Bangladesh – Expansion projects at the Port of Chattogram are progressing, with officials anticipating a significant increase in the port’s capacity and its role as a key regional trade hub. Recent upgrades and planned developments are intended to address growing demand and facilitate increased connectivity with neighboring countries.

The ongoing infrastructure improvements include the construction of new terminals, deepening of channels, and acquisition of modern handling equipment. The New Mooring Container Terminal (NMCT), built under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, has already begun operations, adding an initial capacity of 450,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) annually. Officials project that once fully operational, the NMCT will increase the port’s overall capacity by over 30%.

Beyond the NMCT, the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) is undertaking several other significant projects. These include the construction of a new multi-purpose terminal at Laldia, designed to handle various types of cargo, and the deepening of the main navigational channel to allow larger vessels to access the port. Dredging work is crucial to accommodate ships with deeper drafts, reducing the need for transshipment and lowering transportation costs.

The expansion isn’t limited to physical infrastructure. The CPA is also investing in digitalization and automation to improve efficiency and streamline operations. This includes implementing a port community system (PCS) to facilitate information exchange between stakeholders, and deploying automated container handling equipment. These technological upgrades are expected to reduce turnaround times and enhance the overall competitiveness of the port.

The growing demand for Chattogram Port’s services is driven by Bangladesh’s robust economic growth and increasing international trade. The country’s ready-made garment (RMG) industry, a major export earner, relies heavily on the port for shipping goods to global markets. Furthermore, Bangladesh is becoming an increasingly important transit hub for trade between India and its northeastern states, utilizing the port for the movement of goods.

However, the expansion project faces challenges. Land acquisition for new facilities has been a recurring issue, leading to delays and increased costs. Environmental concerns regarding dredging and its impact on marine ecosystems also require careful consideration and mitigation measures.
