The New Mooring Container Terminal (NMCT), built under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, has already begun operations, adding an initial capacity of 450,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) annually. Officials project that once fully operational, the NMCT will increase the port’s overall capacity by over 30%.
Beyond the NMCT, the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) is undertaking several other significant projects. These include the construction of a new multi-purpose terminal at Laldia, designed to handle various types of cargo, and the deepening of the main navigational channel to allow larger vessels to access the port. Dredging work is crucial to accommodate ships with deeper drafts, reducing the need for transshipment and lowering transportation costs.
The expansion isn’t limited to physical infrastructure. The CPA is also investing in digitalization and automation to improve efficiency and streamline operations. This includes implementing a port community system (PCS) to facilitate information exchange between stakeholders, and deploying automated container handling equipment. However, the expansion project faces challenges. Land acquisition for new facilities has been a recurring issue, leading to delays and increased costs.
