Chattogram Port Expansion Boosts Regional Trade Potential

Chattogram, Bangladesh – Ongoing expansions at the Port of Chattogram are poised to significantly increase the country’s trade capacity and solidify its position as a key regional logistics hub. The port, Bangladesh’s largest and busiest, handles over 90% of the nation’s seaborne trade, and officials anticipate a substantial increase in throughput following the completion of several major infrastructure projects.

Currently, the port is undergoing a phased expansion that includes the construction of new terminals, deepening of channels, and procurement of advanced handling equipment. The most notable project is the New Mooring Container Terminal (NMCT), built by a consortium and partially operational since late 2023. When fully operational, the NMCT is expected to add an additional 1.7 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) of container handling capacity, bringing the port’s total capacity to over 6.5 million TEUs annually.

The increased capacity is crucial for Bangladesh’s burgeoning economy, which has experienced consistent growth in recent years. Rising garment exports, a key driver of the national economy, rely heavily on efficient port operations. Delays and congestion at the port have historically posed challenges for exporters, leading to increased costs and potential loss of market share. The expansion aims to alleviate these bottlenecks and ensure smoother trade flows.

Beyond garment exports, the port is also becoming increasingly important for handling imports of raw materials, industrial goods, and consumer products. The growing middle class in Bangladesh is driving demand for a wider range of imported goods, further increasing the strain on port infrastructure. The expansion projects are designed to accommodate this growing demand and support the country’s economic diversification efforts.

However, the expansion isn't without its challenges. Land acquisition for the new terminals proved to be a complex and time-consuming process, and environmental concerns regarding dredging and potential impacts on marine ecosystems required careful mitigation strategies. Port authorities have been working with environmental organizations to minimize the ecological footprint of the expansion projects, including implementing measures to protect mangrove forests and biodiversity.

The port expansion is also attracting increased interest from international shipping lines. Several major carriers have announced plans to increase their vessel calls at Chattogram, recognizing the port’s growing importance as a transshipment hub. This is expected to further boost trade volumes and generate economic benefits for the region.

Local businesses express optimism about the long-term impact of the port expansion. “Efficient port operations are vital for our competitiveness,” stated Mohammad Ali, a garment exporter based in Chattogram. “The increased capacity will help us reduce lead times and improve our ability to meet the demands of our international customers.”

Looking ahead, port authorities are planning further expansions, including the construction of additional terminals and the development of a dedicated logistics park. These future projects aim to transform Chattogram into a world-class port and a major gateway for trade in South and Southeast Asia.
