Chattogram, Bangladesh – Authorities in Chattogram are moving forward with a significant expansion of the Chattogram Port, aiming to solidify its position as a key regional trade hub and address growing logistical demands. The project, slated for completion in phases over the next decade, encompasses infrastructure upgrades, increased container handling capacity, and improved connectivity.

Currently, the port handles over 90% of Bangladesh’s seaborne trade. However, increasing trade volumes, coupled with the country’s rapid economic growth, have put considerable strain on existing facilities. Congestion and delays have become increasingly common, impacting both import and export businesses. The expansion is designed to alleviate these issues and facilitate smoother trade flows.

The primary component of the expansion involves the construction of a new multi-purpose terminal at the western side of the port. This terminal will be capable of handling larger container vessels and will incorporate state-of-the-art equipment, including automated container handling systems. Dredging operations are already underway to deepen the channels and allow access for vessels with greater draft.

Beyond the new terminal, the project also includes improvements to existing infrastructure, such as the expansion of container yards, the construction of new roads and railway links, and the upgrading of storage facilities. These enhancements are intended to streamline the movement of goods within the port area and improve its overall efficiency. A new dedicated terminal for handling vehicles is also planned.

Officials emphasize that the expansion is not solely focused on increasing capacity but also on adopting environmentally sustainable practices. Plans include the implementation of green technologies, such as electric-powered equipment and waste management systems, to minimize the port’s environmental footprint. There are also provisions for mangrove reforestation along the port area to protect the coastal ecosystem.

The project is being funded through a combination of government revenue, concessional loans from international development partners, and private sector investment. The Bangladesh Ports Authority (BPA) is overseeing the implementation, working in collaboration with various international engineering and construction firms.

Experts predict that the expanded Chattogram Port will not only benefit Bangladesh but also serve as a vital transit point for trade between South Asia and Southeast Asia. Its strategic location, coupled with its improved infrastructure, could attract more international shipping lines and boost regional economic integration. The port’s increased capacity is expected to significantly reduce shipping costs and transit times for businesses in the region.

However, challenges remain. Land acquisition for the expansion has proven to be a complex process, requiring negotiations with numerous landowners and the resettlement of affected communities. Ensuring adequate security and maintaining efficient customs procedures are also critical to the success of the project. The BPA is actively addressing these challenges and working to ensure a smooth and timely completion of the expansion. Local businesses express optimism but urge the authorities to prioritize transparency and efficient project management to realize the full benefits of the investment.
