Dhaka Capitals Clinch BPL Title in Thrilling Final
Dhaka Capitals clinched the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024 title in a nail-biting final against Khulna Tigers at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Sunday. The match, watched by thousands of enthusiastic fans, saw Dhaka Capitals secure a five-wicket victory with three balls remaining after chasing down a target of 185 runs.
Khulna Tigers scored 184 for seven in their allotted 20 overs, with captain Litton Das top-scoring with 72 runs off 52 balls. Mohammad Naim contributed 34, but the rest of the batting lineup struggled against Dhaka Capitals' disciplined bowling. Spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the standout bowler for Dhaka, taking three wickets for 28 runs, while fast bowler Taskin Ahmed claimed two wickets. The turning point came in the 15th over when Mehidy dismissed Litton Das, breaking Khulna Tigers' momentum and allowing Dhaka Capitals to regain control.
Dhaka Capitals faced early trouble in their chase, losing openers for just 25 runs in the fourth over. However, a crucial 60-run partnership between Najmul Hossain Shanto (60 off 48) and Shakib Al Hasan (45 not out off 32) steadied the innings. After Shanto's dismissal in the 16th over, Shakib partnered with tailender Shoriful Islam to see the team home, hitting crucial boundaries to maintain the required run rate. Shakib's aggressive hitting in the final overs, including three sixes, sealed the win as the team reached 186 for five with three balls to spare.
Shakib Al Hasan was awarded Player of the Match for his all-round performance, which included two wickets in the opposition's innings. His innings, coming at a strike rate of 140.62, highlighted his ability to perform under pressure. This victory marks Dhaka Capitals' third BPL title, further cementing their status as one of the league's most successful franchises.
Dhaka Capitals captain Tamim Iqbal praised the team's resilience. "It was a tough match, but the players stuck to their plans. Shakib's experience in high-pressure situations was crucial," he said. Coach Chandika Hathurusingha added, "This win reflects the strength of our squad and the hard work throughout the season. We're delighted to bring the trophy back for the third time."
The BPL's success has been significant for Bangladesh's cricket ecosystem, with the league attracting international attention and boosting domestic talent. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has already included several BPL performers in the squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled for later this year. The league's record viewership and global broadcast reach underscore its growing influence in international cricket.
With the national team preparing for a busy international schedule, the BPL serves as a vital platform for players to showcase their skills. The tournament's competitive nature has also raised the standard of domestic cricket, providing a pathway for emerging talents to break into the national setup. As Bangladesh continues to strengthen its position in global cricket, the BPL remains a cornerstone of its development strategy.
