Khulna Port Expansion Project Aims to Boost Regional Trade
The Bangladesh government has unveiled a major infrastructure initiative to expand Khulna Port, aiming to enhance trade connectivity in the southwestern region. The $150 million project, funded through the national budget, will be implemented by the Khulna Development Authority and the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority. It includes dredging the river channel, constructing new berths, and improving road and rail links. Officials stated that the expansion will increase the port's annual cargo capacity from 2.5 million to 5 million tons within 18 months.
Construction is scheduled to commence next month, with completion expected by late 2025. The upgrade is part of a broader national strategy to develop multiple port facilities, reducing reliance on Chittagong Port and promoting economic growth outside Dhaka. The Khulna Division, a key agricultural and industrial hub, is expected to benefit significantly from improved logistics infrastructure.
Local industries, including jute, textiles, and agricultural products, will see reduced transportation costs and faster export processes. "This development is a game-changer for businesses in the region," said a spokesperson from the Ministry of Shipping. "Khulna Port will serve as a vital link, easing congestion at Chittagong and supporting regional economic diversification."
Environmental groups have raised concerns about the potential impact on the Sundarbans mangrove forest, located approximately 50 kilometers from the port site. Activists worry that increased shipping activity could harm the ecosystem. The government has assured that strict environmental safeguards will be enforced, including regular monitoring and compliance with international standards. Environmental experts have noted that dredging and increased vessel traffic could affect water quality and marine life, but the Ministry has pledged comprehensive impact assessments and controlled dredging schedules.
Business leaders have welcomed the project, citing its potential to attract new investments and create jobs. "This will open opportunities for small and medium enterprises," said a representative from the Khulna Chamber of Commerce. "We anticipate significant growth in trade and manufacturing sectors as a result."
The project aligns with Bangladesh's long-term vision to develop a multi-port system. With Payra Port recently operational and Chittagong undergoing upgrades, Khulna's expansion is seen as a strategic step to decentralize trade operations and foster regional development across the country.
