The Khulna Port Authority has officially launched a major expansion project aimed at increasing the port's cargo handling capacity and improving infrastructure to support growing regional trade. The initiative, announced by the Ministry of Shipping on Tuesday, is part of the government's broader strategy to develop Bangladesh's maritime infrastructure and boost economic growth in the southwestern region.
The project, estimated at $150 million and funded through a combination of government allocation and a $100 million loan from the Asian Development Bank, includes dredging the port's channel to allow larger vessels, constructing new berths, and modernizing cargo handling equipment. The dredging will deepen the channel from 8 meters to 12 meters, accommodating vessels up to 10,000 tons. The expansion is expected to be completed in three years, with the first phase scheduled to be operational by early 2025. Officials stated that the upgrades will enable the port to handle up to 5 million tons of cargo annually, up from the current 2.5 million tons.
'Khulna Port has long been a vital hub for the country's trade, especially for industries in the southwestern region,' said Shipping Minister Fazle Kabir during the announcement ceremony. 'This expansion will not only improve efficiency but also reduce transportation costs for local businesses, making our goods more competitive in global markets.'
The project is expected to create over 1,200 jobs during construction and several hundred permanent positions once fully operational. It also aims to reduce congestion at the country's main port in Chittagong by diverting some cargo traffic to Khulna, which is strategically located for trade with India's West Bengal and northeastern states, as well as other South Asian nations.
Local business leaders have welcomed the initiative. 'This will be a game-changer for industries in Khulna and the surrounding districts,' said Mohammad Ali, president of the Khulna Chamber of Commerce. 'We've been waiting for this for years. It will cut logistics costs significantly and attract more investment to the region, especially for sectors like jute, shrimp, and textiles which are vital to the local economy.'
However, environmental concerns have been raised by some activists. The Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are located near Khulna, and critics worry that increased shipping activity could impact the fragile ecosystem. The government has assured that strict environmental safeguards will be in place, including regular monitoring and adherence to international standards.
The Khulna Port expansion is part of Bangladesh's larger vision to develop multiple ports across the country, including Payra and Matarbari, to create a more balanced and efficient maritime trade network. The government has also pledged to involve local communities in the planning process to address concerns and ensure sustainable development. As the project progresses, stakeholders will closely monitor its implementation to ensure it meets both economic and environmental objectives.
