RAJSHAHI — Local authorities and agricultural experts in Rajshahi are intensifying efforts to modernize the region's mango production and processing infrastructure. As the primary hub for mango cultivation in Bangladesh, the city and its surrounding districts are seeking to transition from traditional farming methods to high-tech agricultural practices to meet international quality standards.
Recent initiatives led by the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) aim to introduce advanced cold-storage facilities and improved packaging techniques. These upgrades are designed to reduce post-harvest losses, which have historically plagued local farmers, and to extend the shelf life of the fruit for long-distance transport. By implementing these changes, Rajshahi hopes to secure a larger share of the global fruit market, particularly in the Middle East and Europe.
Economic analysts suggest that the shift toward organic certification and the elimination of harmful chemicals in the ripening process are critical steps for the region. Several local cooperatives have already begun adopting Global GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) standards. This move is intended to remove trade barriers and satisfy the stringent health and safety regulations imposed by importing nations.
Beyond the economic impact, the push for innovation is creating new opportunities for the youth in the Rajshahi division. Agrotech startups are emerging, focusing on drone-based pesticide application and smart irrigation systems. These technological advancements are making farming more attractive to the younger generation, who were previously migrating to Dhaka in search of corporate employment.
On the international front, Bangladesh's mangoes are gaining recognition for their unique taste and aroma, but consistency in size and quality remains a challenge. Trade officials are currently in talks with international logistics firms to establish a more efficient supply chain, including the use of temperature-controlled air freight. This would allow premium varieties of Rajshahi mangoes to reach global markets while maintaining peak freshness.
However, the transition is not without its hurdles. Small-scale farmers often struggle with the high initial costs of modern equipment and a lack of access to formal credit. To address this, the government and several non-governmental organizations are introducing low-interest loans and providing subsidized training on sustainable farming techniques.
As the upcoming harvest season approaches, the focus remains on ensuring that the infrastructure can handle the surge in production. The integration of digital marketplaces is also being explored, allowing farmers to bypass intermediaries and sell directly to wholesalers and retailers, thereby increasing their profit margins.
With these strategic improvements, Rajshahi is positioning itself not just as a regional agricultural center, but as a competitive player in the international fruit trade, contributing significantly to Bangladesh's national export earnings.
