Sylhet Airport Expansion Approved to Enhance Regional Connectivity
Sylhet International Airport expansion project approved by the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) with a budget of Tk 1,200 crore. The initiative aims to boost regional connectivity and economic growth in northeastern Bangladesh. The project includes construction of a new terminal building, runway upgrades, and enhanced cargo facilities, with completion expected within 18 months.
The expansion is part of the government's national strategy to modernize aviation infrastructure. Currently serving 1.2 million passengers annually, the airport's new terminal will increase capacity to 2.5 million passengers per year, addressing growing demand from tourism and the diaspora community. The project also includes improvements to air traffic control systems and ground transportation links to the city center.
Civil Aviation Minister Md. Nasim stated, 'This project underscores our commitment to improving infrastructure in Sylhet, which has seen significant growth in tourism and trade. The upgraded facilities will attract more international flights, particularly from the Middle East and Southeast Asia, where many Sylheti expatriates reside.' He added that the project is expected to be completed within 18 months.
Local business leaders welcome the development, noting improved air connectivity will boost trade in tea, garments, and agricultural products. Sylhet's tea gardens and handicrafts industry, key contributors to the national economy, are expected to gain better access to global markets. Current infrastructure limitations have previously hindered foreign investment in the region.
Residents of Sylhet have expressed optimism about job creation during construction and long-term economic benefits. A local hotel owner noted, 'This will make travel easier for families visiting relatives abroad and for tourists exploring natural attractions like the Surma River and Ratargul Swamp Forest.' The airport's current capacity constraints have been a challenge for the tourism sector, which has seen steady growth in recent years.
However, some environmental groups have raised concerns about potential ecological impacts near wetlands. The CAAB has assured that environmental safeguards will be integrated into the construction plan to protect local biodiversity, including measures to minimize disruption to nearby ecosystems.
The expansion aligns with Bangladesh's Vision 2041 plan, positioning Sylhet as a strategic gateway for northeastern Bangladesh and strengthening regional integration. The project is expected to contribute to the government's goal of increasing air travel demand and supporting the country's economic growth targets.
