South Asia Security: Challenges and Collaborative Solutions in Bangladesh and Beyond

Recent years have seen increased collaboration between Bangladesh and its South Asian neighbors through initiatives like the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).However, challenges persist. The porous borders between Bangladesh, India, and Myanmar continue to be a conduit for illegal arms trafficking and human smuggling. The rise of extremist groups and the threat of cyber-attacks on critical infrastructure demand enhanced intelligence sharing and technological investment. Climate change exacerbates these issues, as rising sea levels and natural disasters create new security risks for coastal communities. Bangladesh's National Security Policy 2021 emphasizes the need for multi-agency coordination and public-private partnerships to address these threats. The government has also strengthened maritime security through the Bangladesh Navy's modernization program and participation in regional naval exercises. Experts argue that effective security governance in South Asia requires not only military preparedness but also economic development and social inclusion. By fostering regional dialogue and investing in sustainable solutions, Bangladesh and its neighbors can build a more secure future for the entire South Asian region.
