Chattogram Port Expansion to Boost Regional Trade

Chattogram, Bangladesh – Ongoing expansion projects at Chattogram Port are poised to significantly increase the country’s trade capacity and solidify its position as a key regional logistics hub. The port, Bangladesh’s busiest, handles over 90% of the nation’s seaborne trade, and authorities are investing heavily to address growing demand and accommodate larger vessels.

The primary project underway is the construction of a new multi-purpose terminal, the New Mooring Container Terminal (NMCT), built under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This terminal, expected to be operational in late 2025, will add approximately 800 meters of berth length and increase the port’s container handling capacity by an estimated 1.7 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) annually. The project represents a significant investment, totaling over $600 million, with funding coming from both the Bangladeshi government and a consortium of international investors.

Beyond the NMCT, other crucial developments include dredging activities to deepen the port’s navigational channels, enabling access for larger container ships with increased draft. This is vital for accommodating vessels directly from Europe and the Americas, reducing reliance on transshipment through ports like Singapore and Colombo. The deepening project, nearing completion, will allow vessels up to 16 meters draft to enter the port, a substantial improvement over the previous limit.

Officials emphasize that the expansion isn’t solely about increasing capacity; it's also about enhancing efficiency. Modernizing handling equipment, implementing advanced port management systems, and improving connectivity with inland transportation networks are integral parts of the overall plan. A dedicated rail corridor connecting the port with the national railway network is under development, aiming to facilitate faster and more reliable movement of goods to and from the port.

The expansion is expected to have a ripple effect on the Bangladeshi economy. Increased trade capacity will support the growth of key export industries, such as ready-made garments, leather goods, and pharmaceuticals. It is also anticipated to attract foreign investment and create employment opportunities in the Chattogram region.

However, challenges remain. Land acquisition for the expansion projects has been a complex process, requiring negotiations with numerous landowners and resettlement of affected communities. Environmental concerns, particularly regarding dredging activities and their impact on marine ecosystems, are also being addressed through environmental impact assessments and mitigation measures.

Experts note that Chattogram Port’s success will also depend on regional connectivity and cooperation. Improved road and rail links with neighboring countries, such as India, Myanmar, and Nepal, are crucial for leveraging the port’s expanded capacity and establishing Bangladesh as a regional trade gateway. Discussions are underway to enhance cross-border transportation infrastructure and streamline customs procedures.

The port authority is also focusing on digitalization, aiming to implement a fully integrated port community system that connects all stakeholders – shipping lines, importers, exporters, customs officials, and transport providers – in a seamless digital platform. This will improve transparency, reduce paperwork, and enhance overall efficiency.

While other ports in the region are also undergoing expansion, Chattogram Port’s strategic location and ongoing investments position it to become a leading maritime hub in South Asia, contributing significantly to Bangladesh’s economic growth and regional trade connectivity.
