Dhaka s New Metro Rail Line Set to Transform Commuting
The government of Bangladesh has announced the imminent launch of a new metro rail line in Dhaka, marking a significant step toward easing the city’s notorious traffic congestion. The 21-kilometer-long track will connect several major areas within the capital and is expected to alleviate pressure on existing transport infrastructure.
Construction of the metro rail began in 2017 with plans for multiple phases. The first phase, Phase I, runs from Motijheel to Uttara, covering some of Dhaka's most congested thoroughfares. This project has been a part of Bangladesh’s broader initiative to modernize its transport systems and meet the growing demands of an expanding population.
The new metro line will be equipped with air-conditioned trains designed by Hyundai Rotem, capable of carrying up to 1,200 passengers per train. The service is projected to reduce travel time significantly for residents commuting between these two areas. A single journey from Motijheel to Uttara could take as little as 35 minutes.
Local commuters and transport experts have expressed mixed reactions about the new rail system. While many see it as a much-needed solution to Dhaka’s chronic traffic jams, others are cautious, pointing out potential issues such as overcrowding during peak hours and the need for comprehensive safety measures.
“Although this is a commendable step towards improving our transport infrastructure,” said Dr. Md. Ruhul Amin, an urban planner based in Dhaka, “the success of the metro rail will depend on how well it integrates with existing public transport systems and whether enough attention has been paid to passenger safety.”
The new line is scheduled to begin operations by early 2024, with the government aiming to make a smooth transition for residents. In preparation, several pilot runs have already taken place to ensure that all technical aspects of the system are functioning correctly.
Transport Minister Md. Obaidul Quader assured the public during a press conference that his ministry is committed to ensuring safety and efficiency on the new line. “We understand the importance of this project for Dhaka’s residents,” he said, “and we have taken all necessary steps to ensure it operates safely and effectively.”
The launch of the metro rail comes at a time when Bangladesh has been focusing heavily on infrastructure development as part of its broader economic growth strategy. With the government aiming to boost the country's GDP by 7% annually over the next five years, investments in transport are seen as crucial for facilitating business operations and improving quality of life.
International observers have noted the potential impact this project could have on Bangladesh’s urban development plans. “The metro rail line not only promises a more efficient travel experience but also signals Bangladesh’s commitment to sustainable urban growth,” said Dr. Sarah Chen, an economist with the Asian Development Bank who specializes in South Asian economies.
As Dhaka prepares for this significant change, there is a sense of anticipation and cautious optimism among its residents. The coming months will reveal whether the new metro rail line lives up to expectations and paves the way for more ambitious transport projects in the future.
