Dhaka, the bustling capital of Bangladesh, is set to undergo a major transformation in its urban transportation system with the inauguration of its new metro rail service. The first phase of the Dhaka Metro Rail project was launched on January 28th, marking a significant milestone for Bangladesh's efforts towards sustainable and efficient public transport.

The initial segment of the metro rail covers approximately 16 kilometers, connecting major areas of the city such as Motijheel to Uttara. This is expected to ease traffic congestion in some of Dhaka’s most densely populated areas and provide commuters with a faster alternative to congested roads. The new service operates from 5:30 AM to 9:30 PM, with trains arriving every six minutes during peak hours.

The project has been undertaken by the Dhaka Metro Rail Limited (DMRL), a subsidiary of the Bangladesh Railway, in collaboration with China Metros Technology and Equipment Corporation. The total cost of the first phase is estimated at around USD 1 billion, funded through loans from Chinese banks and domestic resources.

"This metro rail service will not only reduce travel time for millions of Dhaka residents but also contribute to reducing air pollution by cutting down on vehicular emissions," said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during the inauguration ceremony. She emphasized that this is just the beginning and more phases are planned to extend coverage across the city.

The response from local residents has been mixed, with many expressing hope for improved commutes but also concerns about ticket pricing and operational efficiency. "While I am excited about the new metro rail, I do worry if it will be affordable enough for daily use," said Shahin Ahmed, a resident of Motijheel.

The Dhaka Metro Rail is equipped with modern technology including automatic fare collection systems and air-conditioned carriages to ensure passenger comfort. The DMRL has also introduced mobile apps that provide real-time updates on train schedules and routes, aimed at making the service user-friendly for all age groups.

Environmentalists are particularly optimistic about the project's potential to reduce carbon emissions in one of the world’s most densely populated cities. "We believe this new metro system will play a crucial role in improving air quality in Dhaka," said Dr. Kamal Hossain, an environmental scientist at Dhaka University. He added that further expansion and integration with other forms of public transport could significantly reduce traffic congestion.

The success of the first phase is expected to pave the way for the second and third phases, which are already under planning stages. These subsequent segments will extend the metro rail network deeper into Dhaka's suburbs and beyond, aiming to cover more than 60 kilometers in total by completion.
