Rajshahi Mango Exports Hit Record High in 2024 Season

Rajshahi, Bangladesh – The northern city of Rajshahi has reported a record surge in mango exports this season, with shipments increasing by 25% compared to last year. According to the Department of Agricultural Marketing, over 12,000 metric tons of mangoes were exported in the first half of 2024, valued at approximately $15 million. The primary destinations include the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and the United States, reflecting growing global demand for Bangladeshi mango varieties such as Langra and Fazli.

Local farmers and exporters attribute the growth to improved agricultural practices and better post-harvest handling techniques. "We've adopted modern storage and transportation methods, which have reduced spoilage significantly," said Rahman Ali, a mango grower in Natore district. "This year's quality was exceptional, and international buyers have shown strong interest."

The Rajshahi City Corporation and the government have also played a role by establishing new cold storage facilities and streamlining export procedures. A recent initiative under the "Mango Export Promotion Program" has provided subsidies for packaging materials and facilitated direct flights for perishable goods. "These measures have helped us meet international standards more efficiently," said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture.

However, challenges remain. Climate change continues to impact crop yields, with erratic rainfall patterns affecting certain regions. Some farmers in the Padma River belt have reported reduced harvests due to flooding, while others face water scarcity during critical growth periods. "We need more sustainable solutions to address these issues," said Dr. Anwar Hossain, an agricultural researcher at Rajshahi University.

A UAE-based importer, Mohammed Al-Farsi, noted, "Bangladeshi mangoes have become a favorite among our customers, especially during the summer months. The quality this season has been outstanding, and we plan to increase our orders next year." Similarly, UK retailers have reported a 30% rise in sales of Bangladeshi mangoes compared to last year.

Despite the obstacles, industry experts remain optimistic. The export figures are expected to rise further as new markets in Southeast Asia and Europe are being explored. "Rajshahi's mangoes are gaining recognition for their unique taste and quality," said Saleem Ahmed, a trade analyst. "With continued investment in infrastructure and research, Bangladesh could become a leading mango exporter in the region."

The government has announced plans to expand cold chain logistics and provide training for farmers on climate-resilient farming techniques. These efforts aim to stabilize production and ensure consistent quality for export markets. For now, the 2024 season's success has boosted the local economy, providing a significant income boost for thousands of farmers and traders in the region. The mango industry now supports over 50,000 livelihoods in Rajshahi and neighboring districts, according to official estimates.
