Bangladesh Clinches First-Ever T20 Series Win Against Australia
Bangladesh’s national cricket team has secured its first-ever T20 series win against Australia after a thrilling 2-1 victory in the three-match series held in Dhaka. The final match, played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on March 27, saw Bangladesh chase down Australia’s 156 runs with five wickets in hand, sealing the series triumph.
In the opening match on March 25, Australia dominated with an eight-wicket win, posting 162 runs and restricting Bangladesh to 154. However, Bangladesh bounced back in the second game on March 26, winning by six wickets. Liton Das scored 48, while spinner Mahedi Hasan took three wickets to restrict Australia to 142. Bangladesh reached the target with 18 balls remaining.
The decider on March 27 saw Australia score 155 for 7, with Mitchell Marsh top-scoring at 52. Mustafizur Rahman’s two wickets and Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s economical bowling (2 for 28) kept Australia in check. Bangladesh’s chase was anchored by Najmul Hossain Shanto’s unbeaten 52, supported by Tanzid Hasan’s 32. Despite losing three early wickets, the team reached 157 for 5 with three overs to spare.
This historic win marks a significant milestone for Bangladesh cricket, which has previously struggled against Australia in T20 formats. The two teams had faced each other in six prior T20 series, with Australia winning all. The current victory not only breaks that streak but also boosts Bangladesh’s confidence ahead of the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in June.
Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim praised his team’s resilience. “It’s a proud moment for us. Australia is a top team, and to come back after losing the first game shows our character. The players executed the plans well under pressure,” he said post-match. Australian captain Pat Cummins acknowledged Bangladesh’s strong performance, stating, “They played smart cricket and deserved the series win. We’ll learn from this.”
The series also highlighted emerging talents like teenager Sabbir Rahman, who scored crucial runs in the second match, and spinner Mahedi Hasan, whose economical bowling was key. Coach Russell Domingo emphasized the team’s growth, noting, “This series reflects our progress in adapting to different conditions and handling high-pressure situations.”
Beyond cricket, Bangladesh’s sports scene remains active. The national football team is preparing for the SAFF Championship qualifiers, and local athletes are training for the Asian Games. However, the T20 series victory has dominated recent sports discussions, underscoring the nation’s growing prowess in international cricket.
This victory is expected to inspire domestic cricket development, with increased interest in grassroots programs and youth tournaments. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has announced plans to leverage this momentum for future tournaments, aiming to strengthen the team’s position in global rankings.
